Northern Territory scheme to GET migrant engineers into meaningful roles in Australia

Visas and immigration information 2023 Published on July 28, 2023

It’s no secret to anyone who works n the industry that Australia wide, on top of rising costs of materials and labour there is also a shortage of management professionals and qualified engineers to coordinate the projects which are driving the economy.

What may come as a surprise to you readers is that there is an abundance of overqualified retail assistants and Uber drivers here who have been granted permanent residence status for their education and work history that makes them a suitable fit for these roles.

Recent studies have shown that up to 47% of migrant engineers who have settled in Australia are not currently employed in roles they are qualified to do.

Due to reasons such as the location of where they were educated, or the lack of local on-site experience contractors and recruiters are overlooking their applications.

Northern Territory Government is taking action to help eradicate these exclusion rates and create a pathway into the industry for these willing experienced workers.

by pioneering a ‘virtual internship’ entry to work program (GET).

GET Engineering Talent program course (being offered by Engineering Education Australia) is a 6 week preparation course where participants will receive engineering standards training to bring them in line with more specific local legislation and requirements. Upon complementing the initial 6 weeks the aim is to elevate these candidates to a 12 week paid internship with a leading engineering firm.

Throughout the Program both the employer’s current workforce and the engineer candidates will receive ongoing assistance to help the integration process run smoothly.

Each engineer will be paired with a mentor from the employing contractor to build social connections and become a part of local networks.

In addition to Australian standards and procedures the program is designed to collaborate the engineer candidates and employing contractors professionally and socially to secure long term relationships and stable progression for both parties.

At the time of writing this,

It Is enlightening to see action being taken by Northern Territory Govt. We’l watch eagerly to report if other states take similar action when success rates become available.
