About The Role
The Medical Physics and Radiation Engineering (MPRE) department at Canberra Health Services is composed of medical physics specialists in radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, and radiology giving our department a collegial diversity of medical physicists working together.The team is responsible for safety and quality in the use of medical radiation. They contribute technical and scientific support to clinical and research staff enabling efficient use of resources for the diagnosis, treatment and research of disease using medical radiation.
The successful applicant will learn and contribute to the delivery of state-of-the-art radiotherapy for our cancer patients. Equipment currently includes three Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators with capabilities for Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), and a Varian Edge linear accelerator primarily dedicated to stereotactic cranial and body radiotherapy. HyperArc and Exactrac are used for SRS planning and position verification, respectively. We use the Aria oncology information system which is cloud hosted. Other treatment services include superficial x-ray therapy and brachytherapy.
We are currently working on deformable registration, Eclipse scripting and further development of the SRS and SBRT programs. Under appropriate direction and supervision, it is expected that the successful applicant will learn to participate in providing ongoing medical physics support for the abovementioned items as well as working as a valued team member carrying out the job duties stated below.
Our team participates in Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Cooperative Group (TROG) trials, and the department is accredited to train diagnostic radiology and radiation oncology medical physics registrars.Our team members have active collaborations with University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, and the University of Canberra. We are also actively participating in machine learning and artificial intelligence projects related to radiotherapy with the AusCAT (Australian Computer-Assisted Theragnostics) network.

Canberra Hospital Expansion Project – CHS is constructing a new critical services building called ‘Building 5’ which is a 44,000sqm nine storey building specifically designed to deliver state-of-the-art acute clinical services at the Canberra Hospital. North Canberra Hospital - As of 3 July 2023 Calvary Public Hospital Bruce transitioned to CHS and became North Canberra Hospital. The transition will deliver a health system networked under one provider and will provide increased workforce opportunities for staff at both CHS sites. The ACT Government will be building a new northside hospital on the existing hospital campus in Bruce to meet the growing health care needs of our community, with construction to commence mid-decade providing more beds, increased services, and increased career opportunities.
