Geotechnical Engineer/Tunnel Engineer

Aldea Engineering Services Ltd, a regional engineering firm, is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer/Tunnel Engineer in our Toronto, ON office. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years working on major underground, tunnel, and trenchless projects, including both design and construction roles. Specific duties are generally described as follows:
- Project Management – including development of proposals, cost estimates and schedules for tunnel, trenchless and rehabilitation projects.
- Lead tasks and produce technical deliverables according to client specifications.
- Communicate technical and non-technical information in a concise, professional manner, including participation in technical meetings and workshops with owners, contractors, and other stakeholders
- Geotechnical engineering associated with the tunnel and trenchless design and construction of transit (road/rail), and municipal water and wastewater conveyance facilities
- Engineering Calculations – produce geotechnical engineering calculations (including numerical analysis) as required in support of tunnel and trenchless design including support of excavation (shafts & tunnels – including connection details and complex structures), and adherence to all local and national codes of practice for concrete, steel, and timber design.
- Independent development of Technical Memoranda, Letters, and Reports.
- Geotechnical Reporting – proficiency in preparation of Technical Memoranda, Geotechnical Data Reports (GDR’s), and Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBR’s)
- Geotechnical Parametric Studies/Evaluations - develop design parameters from geotechnical reports.
- Prepare construction plans and specifications, structural/geotechnical calculations and design reports, and technical memoranda
- Increase Aldea’s visibility with internal and external professionals by participating in regional initiatives, conferences, committees, and community associations, including any identified industry activities.
- Field based assignments may include weekday, night, and weekend work. Office based assignments will require a standard weekday business hours work schedule.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant area of study required
- Master’s Degree a plus
- 10+ years of relevant experience
- Must be eligible for work in Canada/Markham, Ontario area.
- Substantial professional project expertise in the planning, design and construction of a variety of tunnel and trenchless projects
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or equivalent knowledge of a wide range of tunnel and trenchless construction methods
Preferred Qualifications
- 15+ years of experience with a minimum of 10 years in Tunnel, Trenchless, or Underground Projects
- Master’s Degree in Civil, Geological/Geotechnical, or related field
- Experience with delivering tunnel and trenchless solutions for projects in soft ground and hard rock
- Experience with the inspection and design of rehabilitation measures for existing transit and/or water and sewer tunnels
- Substantial professional project expertise in the planning, design and construction of tunnel and trenchless projects
- Experience working on tunnel and trenchless projects in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada, and USA
- Training and experience in project management
- Experience in proposal writing and job scoping
- Excellent problem-solving, decision making and teamwork skills
- Excellent technical writing skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills, a thorough knowledge of relevant technical codes, operations, processes, and trends
- Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, contractors, and clients
- Ability to work independently, exercise independent judgment, interact with other staff, collaborate with other disciplines, and mentor junior staff
